OpenRouter Alternatives (2026): 7 LLM Gateways Compared

OpenRouter gives you one API key, one credit balance and an OpenAI-compatible endpoint for more than 500 models. Below: why builders leave it, then seven gateways with who each is for, what its official site says about pricing, and the trade-off to know before switching.

How we wrote this: every price, plan and feature comes from each tool's own website, checked October 18, 2026. We haven't run hands-on tests or latency benchmarks. Prices change often, so check the pricing page before you top up.

Who switches from OpenRouter, and why

  • The fee adds up. OpenRouter bills models at the provider's list price and charges a fee when you buy credits: 5.5% on Standard and 8% on Business.
  • Your requests have to stay in the EU. OpenRouter's EU and US in-region routing is included on Business and Enterprise only.
  • You want to run the gateway yourself. A self-hosted gateway keeps keys and traffic inside your own cloud. On OpenRouter, bring-your-own-key is free up to $25,000 of list-price inference a month, then costs 5%.
  • You live on free models. They're capped at 50 requests a day, or 1,000 once you've bought $10 of credits.

If none of these apply, OpenRouter may still be your best option. It doesn't bill failed attempts, and zero-data-retention routing is on every plan.

1. LiteLLM

Who it's for: teams that want the gateway inside their own cloud, with budgets per key and no third party in the request path.

What the official site says: an MIT-licensed gateway that's free to self-host, with 140+ providers and 1,892 models behind one OpenAI-compatible API. It sets hard budgets per key, team and model, load-balances across providers and caches responses. It runs on your own Postgres and Redis and sends no telemetry to LiteLLM. An Enterprise tier adds SSO, RBAC and support.

Key trade-off: nobody takes a cut, but someone on your team now runs a production service. For a solo builder with one app, that's often more work than a 5.5% fee.

2. Vercel AI Gateway

Who it's for: builders whose app already runs on Vercel, often with the Vercel AI SDK.

What the official site says: no markup and no platform fee on tokens. You pay list price from prepaid AI Gateway Credits, plus any payment processing fees. BYOK has no fee but needs purchased credits. A free tier covers a subset of models at lower rate limits.

Key trade-off: it runs inside a Vercel team account, so it fits best if your stack is already there. Zero data retention routing needs Pro or Enterprise.

3. Opper

Who it's for: builders who need EU hosting and want a smaller fee than OpenRouter's.

What the official site says: 700+ models from 50+ providers through an OpenAI SDK-compatible API, hosted in AWS Stockholm. Token rates pass through at cost. The Gateway tier charges 3% on credit purchases and stores only usage metadata, no prompts or outputs. BYOK is free on Gateway, and failed or fallback attempts aren't billed.

Key trade-off: spend limits per project, model allowlists and tracing are Control Plane features, and using them raises the fee to 5.5%, the same as OpenRouter Standard.

4. Requesty

Who it's for: teams that want managed routing, fallbacks and EU data residency without paying for a business tier.

What the official site says: model cost plus 5%, with no per-seat pricing and no minimum spend. Pay-as-you-go includes 600+ models, BYOK, routing policies, caching, fallbacks, spend limits, an MCP Gateway and EU data residency. The free plan covers free models at 200 requests a day.

Key trade-off: 5% is close to OpenRouter's 5.5%, so you'd switch for EU residency and routing controls, not to save on fees.

5. OneProvider

Who it's for: builders who run Claude Code or Cursor on API keys and want one prepaid balance that also covers GPT, Gemini and DeepSeek.

What the official site says: one key with Anthropic-compatible and OpenAI-compatible endpoints, so Claude Code connects by setting a base URL. One balance with no subscription, no auto-charge and no expiry; when it runs out, requests return a 429 error. The gateway runs in Frankfurt; OneProvider Ltd. (Cyprus) operates it. The homepage advertises volume tiers and "up to 90% savings vs direct". You top up by card or crypto in a web cabinet or a Telegram bot.

Key trade-off: the savings depend on balance tiers, so compare the effective rate at the amount you'd top up, and read the terms and refund policy before moving production traffic.

6. Vergora

Who it's for: builders who want GPT, Claude, Gemini, GLM, Kimi and DeepSeek on one key and care most about price per request.

What the official site says: 30+ models behind one key, with a base URL you swap into existing code. You top up small amounts with Apple Pay or Visa. Each request record shows the request ID, model, status, tokens, latency and estimated cost. The homepage says "up to 90% off list price".

Key trade-off: the catalogue is far smaller than OpenRouter's, and the pages we read don't explain how prices that low are sourced. Start with a small top-up and check request records against your own token counts.

7. SeedRouter

Who it's for: builders who generate images and video (Seedance, Veo, Kling, GPT Image, Nano Banana) and want text models on the same key.

What the official site says: image, video and language models behind one key, billed from a prepaid USD balance that never expires. Failed requests aren't charged. New accounts get $0.10 of free balance, and the smallest top-up is $20. The pricing page lists its rate next to the vendor's for many models; GPT-6 Sol is $1.40 input and $7.00 output per million tokens against a listed official $2.00 and $10.00. It publishes setup guides for Claude Code, Codex and n8n.

Key trade-off: the text catalogue is short, so SeedRouter fits best when media generation is a large share of your spend.

How to choose

  1. Widest catalogue, least setup: stay on OpenRouter.
  2. App on Vercel: try Vercel AI Gateway first.
  3. Own the gateway: self-host LiteLLM, or use Ollama for local models only.
  4. EU data: compare Opper (3%, Stockholm) with Requesty (5%, EU residency on every plan).
  5. Lowest price per token: run the same small workload through OneProvider, Vergora or SeedRouter and through OpenRouter, then compare the bills.

All seven speak an OpenAI-compatible API, so testing one usually means changing a base URL and a key. For more tools to build the rest of your stack, browse all tools.

FAQ

What is the best OpenRouter alternative? It depends on why you're leaving. LiteLLM suits self-hosting, Vercel AI Gateway suits apps on Vercel, Opper and Requesty suit EU data needs, and OneProvider, Vergora and SeedRouter compete on price. Facts are from each official site, checked October 18, 2026.

Is there a free OpenRouter alternative? LiteLLM is free to self-host. Requesty's free plan allows 200 requests a day on free models, Vercel AI Gateway has a free tier for a subset of models, and SeedRouter gives new accounts $0.10 of balance.

Which OpenRouter alternative works with Claude Code? OneProvider has an Anthropic-compatible endpoint, so Claude Code connects with a base URL and key. SeedRouter publishes a Claude Code setup guide.

Did Stackdrop test these gateways? No. This page uses facts from each tool's official website and pricing page, checked October 18, 2026. We haven't measured latency or reliability.
